Some people ignore going to faith-based movies fearing they might be preached to. However, a good entertaining story with a credible cast can get a message across in different ways. The Resurrection Of Gavin Stone is one of these movies. It’s a romantic comedy about two people with little in common and meeting in an unusual way. Lead actors are  Brett Dalton (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Beside Still Waters) as Gavin Stone, and Anjelah Johnson-Reyes (Madtv, Moms’ Night Out, Book of Life, EnoughSaid), as Kelly Richardson .

Gavin is an actor enjoying his career. Deciding to do a little partying he ends up arrested and offered jail or 200 hours of community service. He decides on the community service not realizing it will be in a church (to which he has never been in) and in his hometown where his dad lives. Brett was happy to talk about the film and some of his experiences.

“I knew what kind of movie it was and how it would be received,” Brett said. “But I had no idea until I read the script that it was so funny.”

“I have a weird sense of humor and I liked the comedy in the plot,” Anjelah said. “I also enjoyed the paths of the characters; it’s a good story.”

As Gavin starts his service by mopping the church floors, he focuses on two things that catch his eye. One is Kelly who he notices is directing a group of church members in a play. His ego pops up as he decides he would rather work in a play than mop. At first he strikes out on both. Kelly, Pastor Richardson’s daughter, doesn’t like his demeanor. Gavin knows nothing about Jesus and relies on his phone to pop up information that Gavin can use to impress Kelly he should be Jesus in the play.

A subplot is a struggle between Gavin and his father Waylon Stone (Neil Flynn, Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.) Estranged for a while, Dad goes easy on Gavin until he realizes his son talks the talk but so far isn’t walking the walk. Flynn does a great job portraying Neil.

Several characters in the film have prominent rolls in the story. Wrestling legend Shawn Michaels stars as Doug – a biker whose life was dramatically changed by his faith in God. He watched Gavin as a child star and is all for Gavin once he sees him recite from the script.

D.B. Sweeney (Lonesome Dove, Eight Men Out) does a good job as Church Pastor in keeping an eye on Gavin. Other actors also think Gavin is the perfect choice to play Jesus.

Kelly isn’t sure but does soften up to Gavin and the hard work he puts into besting his performance. Brett and Anjelah create a great chemistry together.

“I Learned we came from the same hometown, and we liked the same music,” Anjelah said about meeting Brett. “And we were both on the same page about this story so it was great to work together on set.”
